New Nationals team need to step up and protect Southern Highlands from coal mining and exploration
The election of a new Nationals Leadership team in NSW is an opportunity for the NSW Government to demonstrate its commitment to protect water and agricultural resources in the Southern Highlands from coal mining and coal exploration.
New Nationals Leader John Barilaro and Deputy Leader and Highlands’ Local, Niall Blair, are being urged to take real leadership by Battle for Berrima in protecting the Highlands from ‘greenfield’ coal mining developments such as the Hume Coal proposal.
‘Battle for Berrima extends our congratulations to the new Nationals leadership team and calls on them to acknowledge the strength of democratic community opposition to coal mining and exploration in the Southern Highlands”, said Battle for Berrima President, Ken Wilson.
“What has led to today’s election of a new Nationals team has been the failure of the Government to engage with the community on critical issues of concern, such as this.
“It is gratifying that the new Nationals leadership team in NSW includes someone from the local Highlands area.
“We are hopeful that the new leader John Barilaro and Deputy Niall Blair will recognise the recent democratic expression of 16,000+ people calling on the NSW Parliament to enact an immediate moratorium on any coal mining or exploration in the Southern Highlands and the critical Sydney Water Catchment.
“We will be seeking a meeting with the new Nationals Team and urging them to work with local MPs Pru Goward and Jai Rowell as well as the Wingecarribee Shire Council in standing with community of the Southern Highlands in protecting our precious water and primary resources from the incompatible activities of coal mining and exploration”, said Mr. Wilson.
